Inspired by the iconic shapes of the renowned Barbican Architectural Complex, Chalk presents a collection that celebrates the harmonious blend of angular details and flowing forms.
Each piece is designed to make a statement, celebrating architectural artistry and connecting wearers to the rich spirit and creativity of one of London’s most beloved landmarks.
With Chalk’s collection, you don’t just wear jewellery—you embody the innovative
spirit of the Barbican itself.
An insight into the design process
Design
When The Barbican approached us to design a core collection inspired by the building, I was truly honoured. The Barbican is one of my favourite spaces in London—a place I’ve visited countless times.
We began by identifying the elements we loved most about the building, focusing on its striking balconies, geometric windows, and tranquil fountains. |
Sketches
The next step in the design process is sketching—my personal favorite (and most challenging!) part. This is where we brainstorm and refine ideas, carefully narrowing them down to form a cohesive collection.
Once the sketches are ready, we move them into a digital drawing package to begin prototyping. This stage involves endless testing—experimenting with colour combinations and shapes until every piece feels just right.
The Shoot
One of the most exciting parts of the process is shooting the collection. Naturally, we chose to photograph it at The Barbican itself. The setting’s rich textures and iconic architecture beautifully enhanced the aesthetic of the collection. My sister, my muse, graciously modelled the pieces (with a little cameo from me!), and the sunny weather gave our jewels the perfect radiant glow.
We also shoot pieces for the website, which can be a much trickier process. Capturing the true colours and shapes of the jewellery to reflect what they’re like in person takes precision and care. We handle all the photography in-house, something we’re incredibly proud of. It’s always amazing to see how much we can achieve with the limited resources we have! I can only imagine what it would be like to have a big budget to do a special campaign (something I often dream of)!
